When evaluating a natural colored stone there are certain characteristics that jewelers and gemologists will look for. One in particular is color zoning, it can be found in sapphire, quartz and tourmaline to name a few. Garnet rarely exhibits this feature. Finding one such as this is truly exceptional since it combines two of the rarest garnet types, colorless garnet (also known as leuco garnet) combined with zones of tsavorite. This intensely banded stone was the only one of gem quality found in a parcel from from Tsavo Park in Kenya.
Late 2020 this stone was sent off to be faceted, the rough was long and flat with the bands running through at an angle that was inconvenient for where the table of the gem would be. The rough had to be adjusted to properly display the stripes of color. Gem cutter Lucas Evans chose a portrait design to both preserve the rough while tactfully orienting the stone to highlight these three bands. This stone is 1.85 carats and measures approx. 12x6mm
